We are a group of teenagers and adult leaders who pray, play, and work hard. The Catholic Youth of Meridian makes an awesome team! We, the Catholic Youth of Meridian (CYM) & the Junior High Catholic Youth of Meridian (JCYM) are comprised of youth from the parishes of St. Joseph and St. Patrick churches. The JCYM & CYM have active members from Grades 5-12. We meet on 2 Sundays a month to pray, play games, and work on service projects. There is one Youth Mass each month at which the youth actively participate as lectors, ushers, gift bearers, Eucharistic ministers, & cantors. Following the Mass, we have Family Game Night where the youth and the adults take part in fun games, physical challenges, and obstacle courses.
We perform every year at the St. Patrick Church Variety Show, which is a fundraiser for St. Patrick School. Each year in October, we work diligently to create a “spooktacular” haunted house for St. Patrick School’s Fall Carnival. During Lent, we present a dramatic reenactment of the Stations of the Cross which is very lifelike and moving. We enjoy helping our community and others in need. In September of each year, we participate in National Public Lands Day at Okatibbee Lake by planting flowers, mulching flower beds, trimming trees, cleaning up trash, building bird houses, and planting corn for the local deer. We host several food, clothing, and personal hygiene drives in order to donate items to local food banks, nursing homes, and personal care homes. Once a month we help out by providing & serving refreshments to the RCIA class.
Catholic Heart Work Camp
Our youth attended Catholic Heart Work Camp in Orlando, Florida, Chicago, Illinois, Providence, Rhode Island, Toledo, Ohio, and Atlanta, Georgia. While there, we made needed repairs at homes of the elderly; as well as, worked at the local Boys & Girls Club and Soup Kitchen. Daily Mass, fun games, and great music were also part of the week’s events. We enjoyed our experience so much that we decided to make it an annual trip.
Do You Like To Have Fun?
Our group LOVES to play hard! We always kick the school year off with a canoe trip down the Okatoma River in Seminary, MS. We have a blast making our way through the rapids, large rocks, and the obstacle course of fallen trees. We enjoy city-wide scavenger hunts, and playing games such as "Catholic Jeopardy" and "Who Wants to be a Catholic Millionaire." We look forward to our yearly bonfire and progressive dinner which are both held in the fall. We go on trips to water parks and theme parks such as Six Flags, Alabama Adventure, & Geyser Falls. Youth lock-ins are held once or twice a year and are filled with many activities including midnight bowling, group games, competitions, karaoke, skits, & prayer.
